Teatro Olimpico - Vicenza
The Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza is a wonderful creation of Andrea Palladio. It is the first indoor theater in the world, built on inspiration of the ancient Roman and Greek theaters.
Beautifully adorned with stucco, frescoes, bas-reliefs and statues, the visual impact of the visitor with this work is extraordinary.
The scenario that is the backdrop to the stage is themselves a masterpiece, and it represents the streets of an ancient city. By means of tricks and optical illusions, it look like the main street around which unravels the urban scenario are much longer than they really are.
The presence of nearly a hundred statues, representing the financing partners of the project, make it seem that theater is a play already in himself, and make it seem like moving even when empty.
The Teatro Olimpico is the expression and testimony of the refined culture very much alive in Vicenza Renaissance. The Olympic Academy, Association of scholars and lovers of art, literature and science, strongly wanted this project, commissioning it to the great Palladio, himself a member of the enlightened and praiseworthy academy.
One of the features which makes this work unique is the fact that, to design, Palladio had to adapt the environment to a place certainly not designed to build a theater: the room was in fact originally barracks, prison and storage of weapons and dust gun, and the garden outside you'd never know that the anonymous walls conceal such a wonder.
