Villa Capra called "La Rotonda"
Masterpiece of Andrea Palladio, Villa Capra "La Rotonda" is located just outside the center of Vicenza, in the most beautiful area of the town, and the green and serene place where it stands still preserves great charm which already bewitched travelers about, such as Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. It's considered the world's most famous Venetian Villa, is protected by UNESCO and is studied and imitated by architects and scholars from all over the globe, especially in the Anglo-Saxon world. The same White House in Washington is inspired to this home with unique characteristics.
It is in fact a circular body, ending with a dome, encased in a cube, and has four all equal entrances, each to each side, preceded by stairways and culminating in a colonnaded loggia, crowned by a pediment in classic style. The revenues are rotated 45 degrees with respect to each cardinal point, because of very precise calculations made by the great architect, for very specific reasons of health and exposure to the sun and the winds. Admiring it, in its perfection and originality, as it has a hypnotic effect, because the eye tends to run around endlessly.
Built for a man of the Church, the cardinal and diplomat Paul Almerico from Vicenza, who commissioned it to Palladio in 1565, it had to be his residence and at the same time his spiritual retreat and place suitable to studies and meditations, once retired after many years passed in the Vatican at the service of two popes.
Palladio, building this residence for him, interpreted perfectly the personality and needs of the client; in fact the Villa is, not surprisingly, a mix between a house and a sacred temple.
Villa Capra La Rotonda is a symbol of the authentic revolution that Palladio realized in the very concept of architecture in the world.
The interior of the villa is fascinating and surprising for the large circular room, high up to the top of the dome, richly painted and decorated with stucco of great visual impact.
We offer guided tours to this gem, which can be inserted in the classic tour of Vicenza, in conjunction with the visit of the nearby Villa Valmarana "Ai Nani", frescoed by Giambattista and Giandomenico Tiepolo, and the beautiful surroundings, with the Monte Berico and its beautiful view of Vicenza and its province.
Villa Capra can also be inserted in a beautiful cycle route in the entirely protected nearby cycling-path, in a very beautiful landscape.
