olympic theater vicenza

Vicenza, located in the center of the Veneto region and of all the main roads too, it is only two hours drive from Milan, less than an hour from Venice, and half an hour from Padua and Verona.

Vicenza was declared a Unesco World Heritage Site, along with the Palladian Villas of its province for the many, wonderful monuments that make the old town, and in many cases also its surroundings, a real jewel.  It is pleasant to visit for its small dimension (the historic center is completely pedestrian) its serene and tranquil atmosphere, and good quality of the environment.  Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe defined Vicenza as "a city-theater" for the impressive and showy scenes created by its most iconic monuments.

Looking around, the view goes straight for the very near Berici Hills, and you notice the good balance between public green spaces and urbanized ones.

Important industrial center, is experiencing in recent years a rapid relaunch of tourism, thanks to the many and important initiatives proposed by public and private entities. Among them, a series of prestigious exhibitions, organized in the exclusive location of the salon of the Palladian Basilica recently restored, which led to the city in the last two years an impressive number of visitors.

The beauty and fame of Vicenza are inextricably linked to the great architect Andrea Palladio , who was born in Padua but moved very young in Vicenza. Palladio has not only changed the face of Vicenza constructing buildings which have entered in the history: he is the architect who has revolutionized the concept of architecture in the world. So much so that there are countless architects and scholars of every age who have tried to study and imitate him. Just think of Thomas Jefferson, US president, who took such Palladian architecture to build his home in Monticello in Virginia; even the White House in Washington was built inspiring to the Palladian architectural "recipe".

Vicenza was, especially during the Renaissance, a kind of aesthetic laboratory. Many very beautiful edifices was built; many of the patrons were aristocratic families, who were competing with each other to build the most beautiful building: it meant to show power, wealth and culture. The beauty and importance of the monuments of Vicenza far exceeds the political one, rather modest, which took the city, and this is an additional element of surprise that captures the visitors, when, walking looking up, you often hear him saying : "look at such a small town, how many beautiful things. Why we had not seen it yet?

The monuments and the most representative places of the city are the Palladian Basilica, which stands out in his white and green copper roof, the many palaces built by the noble families of Vicenza, the beautiful Contrà Porti (a street of the old town), a veritable parade of palaces in pure Venetian Gothic style, the wonderful Teatro Olimpico, the first indoor theater in the world, designed by Andrea Palladio on the inspiration of the ancient Greek and Roman theaters; it's an evidence of genius and of love for the city. Just outside the city center, is another of his "creature": Villa Capra "La Rotonda", considered the Venetian Villa most famous in the world.

Vicenza can be seen in its entirety, along with most part of its province, from the Monte Berico Hill, a place very beloved by the inhabitants of the town.  From there you can admire also the peaks made famous by the dramatic and decisive battles that took place during the First World War: the Monte Grappa, the Cimon, the Ortigara, the Pasubio.

The city is waiting for you with its beauty, with its excellent facilities, with its culinary traditions and its legends .... Many people ask me if the reputation of "magnagati" (cats-eaters in Veneto dialect) of its inhabitants  is only a legend, or is an appellation ... earned on the field. I think that is nice to maintain a bit of suspense and mystery so I always answer that, at the present moment...no one knows... !!
