It has been extimated in over 4000 the so-called Venetian Villas: a real architectural, historical and cultural heritage of this region. We can say that virtually every village has at least one in its own territory. The Villa is often the landmark around which an entire village structure.
The Venetian Villas summarize the story, the costumes and the human stories of Veneto in the span of several centuries. Often born from the evolution of the ancient "castle", built for defensive purposes with towers, battlements and courtyards protected by high walls in a time when wars were frequent, the architecture of the castle has gradually "softened "and gentrified, until, with the passage of time, it took different shapes and functions. So, with the passage of all the Veneto under the Venetian Republic, and the subsequent long period of peace which followed, the architecture (and all art in general) managed to express itself freely, both for the increasing availability of resources, and for the different role that the Villa was gradually assuming with time.
The owners were mostly Venetian nobles, who were going to establish in the Venetian mainland their place of leisure and the center of their economic interests; or even local aristocratic families, who were greatly enriched with the commerce, agriculture, and sometimes covered with prominent public roles.
At a certain moment, the families of the aristocracy began to compete with each other to build the most sumptuous Villa, summoning the best artists.
The advent of the great architect Andrea Palladio introduced a revolution in the concept of Villa. With him, the Venetian Villa came to assume that marvelous harmony which allowed it to integrate the various functions it had to have: the Villa had to represent the social status and personality of the owner, it had to be its representative office where to receive both friends and important personalities, and at the same time it had to represent the seat of work, so it could not contain unnecessary parts. It had to be magnificent and at the same time simple and essential, in order to respond to the criteria of maximum functionality.
Today, many Venetian Villas are studied and admired all over the world just because they sum up in one body all these features; many of them was perfectly restored over the last century, with great economic effort on the part of the owners, and open to visitors. So now, we can in many cases admire beautifully frescoed interiors, which, not infrequently, contain precious and original furnishings.
Considering that in most case hese houses are located in very beautiful areas and thankfully still pristine in landscaping, you can certainly be sure that a visit to one of these jewels is a rewarding experience for the senses and the heart.
