Located in Battaglia Terme, on the slopes of the Euganean Hills, the appearance of the Catajo resembles a castle, as it was fortified and so it remained throughout the centuries until today. In reality it is a real Venetian Villa, for the functions, for the arrangement of the rooms and for decorations of interiors. It was realized starting from 1570.
The appearance is monumental. The Villa contains 350 rooms! Made on the will of a Captain of Fortune, Enea degli Obizzi, became a ducal palace under the Habsburg family, and later summer house of the same family.
It is one of the most unique and fascinating buildings of the Euganean Hills.
The entrance in the shape of triumphal arch introduces the "Garden of the Giants", which could filled with water because sunken within the walls, and there were held games (like battleship) and tournaments. Then, a stairway (designed to be able to climb on horseback) leads to the visitable rooms.
On the main floor, you can visit the frescoed hall and five other rooms, which are also painted with themes such as self-celebration of the glory of the family and business owner at the time, the Obizzi. From the rooms you can go out on the terraces, very nice for the view of the hills that you will enjoy.
Various gardens, a large park with old trees (including sequoias and magnolias) complete the visit to this remarkable complex.
The Catajo , which already explain above is located in the Euganean Hills area, is easily reached from Padua (15 km.), and it is also very close to the walled cities of Este and Monselice.
